The Great Neck Library is considering new documentation requirements for library cards that would require residents applying for or renewing a card to provide a government-issued photo identification along with proof of an address within the Great Neck School District.

The proposed policy was discussed Tuesday, Sept. 22, at the Great Neck Library Board of Trustees meeting. Under the proposed rules, resident applicants would need a current ID, such as a driver’s license, non-driver ID, passport or military ID, as well as a current document showing their name and local address. Acceptable documents would include a lease, deed, mortgage statement, bank statement, utility bill or certain government documents. The proposal has not been adopted.

“We’re asking now for a photo ID as well as proof of the address,” Director Denise Corcoran said, noting that the current policy has allowed multiple forms of documentation, including some that do not contain a photograph.

After the meeting, Corcoran said the change is part of the library’s regular policy review process. The proposal will undergo legal review before a second reading and potential vote.

Corcoran also confirmed that the proposed change will not affect eligibility for the Oct. 26 library election. Under the current election rules, voters must be at least 18, reside in the Great Neck School District and either hold a valid library card by the Oct. 5, 5 p.m. record date or be registered with the Nassau County Board of Elections.

The board also voted not to fill a vacant trustee seat by appointment, instead leaving the position open until the Oct. 26 election. The vacancy resulted from the June resignation of Trustee Brachah Goykadosh. Trustees said the vacancy has not prevented the board from conducting business and that the election will determine who fills the seat.
