Smithtown grinds through tons of storm debris

Smithtown’s Municipal Services Facility had a long night during last weekend’s nor’easter — and by Saturday morning, it had the numbers to prove it.
As the storm moved through Friday, Sept. 25, and into Saturday, Sept. 26, the facility’s crew kept its grinding operation running while Smithtown Highway Department crews cleared downed trees, branches and other debris from town roadways.
By 5 a.m. Sunday, approximately 99 tons of tree debris had already come through the facility, according to the Town of Smithtown. A second shift was scheduled to report at noon as the cleanup continued.
The Town highlighted the work in a Facebook post Sunday, thanking the Municipal Services Facility crew for keeping operations running through the night and giving Highway crews a place to bring the tremendous amount of material they were collecting across Smithtown.
The Municipal Services Facility continued processing the incoming debris into Saturday evening, with Parks Department crews bringing in portable light towers to allow the grinding operation to continue after dark.
The overnight effort was part of a broader response by Town crews following the nor’easter, which brought strong winds and heavy rain to the area. Highway crews were tasked with clearing roadways and responding to downed trees and branches as conditions developed.
