According to a study by the New York State Department of Transportation, the main reason that traffic has become so bad this season is that people can’t get out of the Hamptons. They can drive into it, but they can’t get back out.

Fred Burns and his wife Elaine and their two children age 8 and 10 were shopping on Jobs Lane at the Stevenson’s Toys & Games store.

“It’s now the week after Labor Day, and the kids should be starting classes at Dalton on the Upper East Side, but we can’t get out,” Elaine said.

“I tried coming along Hill Street yesterday and had to turn back,” said Fred. “And the week before that I couldn’t even get out of our driveway.”

“Not that we are complaining,” said Elaine. “There’s lots of good schools here. Ross School is one of them.”
