The Mineola Board of Education approved its goals for the 2026-27 school year Thursday, Sept. 24, while discussing plans for curriculum and receiving an update on proposed changes to New York’s graduation requirements.

During the meeting, the board’s goals included developing a districtwide framework to evaluate literacy instruction and student growth, aligning Pre-K through 12 curriculum with New York’s Portrait of a Graduate standards, strengthening special education practices and expanding communication with families.

The district also plans to conduct a comprehensive survey of its buildings, develop a capital improvement plan and five-year infrastructure plan, update facility-use fees and create a three-year financial model and reserve strategy.

During public comment, a community member said the goals should include ways to measure whether they are being achieved.

“I think it’s important that goals have the ability to be measured so that we can determine whether we are successful in achieving them,” the community member said, pointing specifically to the special education goal and suggesting surveys at the beginning and end of the school year.

Interim Superintendent of Schools Catherine Fishman said the district already has more specific building-level goals connected to the broader board goals.
