Long Island’s homeschooling population has more than tripled over the past 15 years, according to state data.

There were 4,093 homeschooled children across Nassau and Suffolk counties during the 2025-26 school year, according to a Greater Long Island analysis of district-level data published by the New York State Education Department.

And while homeschooling numbers statewide have essentially leveled off, Long Island’s are still moving upward.

The Island’s home-instructed population increased from 3,575 children in 2023-24 to 3,828 the following school year before reaching 4,093 in 2025-26, a nearly 15% increase in two years.

Suffolk County accounts for more than two-thirds of the current Long Island total, with 2,803 children instructed at home. Nassau County had 1,290.
