Alfaro’s OT goal the game winner; sends John Glenn boys soccer to county championship

Before John Glenn took the field for the start of overtime in their Class A boys soccer semifinal against Kings Park, Knights coach Lou Hanner told his players that somebody needed to be a hero.
Forward Cristian Alfaro was the hero Tuesday, Oct. 27, scoring the game’s only goal on an assist from Jesse Columbo with 3:24 left in the first overtime.
It broke a scoreless tie and sent John Glenn to Friday’s Suffolk Class A championship game, where the Knights will try to win their third consecutive county championship.
“We weren’t going to let it end here,” Alfaro, a senior, said. “All I know is that the ball was going in.”
The kick bounced off the post and skittered into the net. It was the biggest goal of his high school career, Alfaro said.
“It was amazing but it wasn’t just me, it was a team effort,” he said. “I feel great for the team. They did an amazing job.”
