Jim Crowe, 94, is a resident of The Bristal in Jericho and said that after working as a teacher for many years, he never wants to stop learning.

Crowe said he takes college courses in his free time at the State University of New York at Old Westbury, which he said he’s been doing since he retired at 70. He said he takes courses in subjects that suit his interests, but he shies away from the hard subjects, like chemistry and physics.

“I’m way behind even at 94,” Crowe said. “I’ve heard of YouTube, but I only use it to see ball games that I miss. … I only regret [not having an iPhone] when the teacher would say, ‘Here’s the homework,’ and they put it on the board, and everybody takes a picture. And I’m trying to write it down. I know I miss an awful lot of life without having [an iPhone], but I gain a lot of time because they’re so all-consuming.”

He said he uses his time wisely while he’s not working on assignments for his classes. Crowe said he works out and serves as a resident ambassador at The Bristal, which entails greeting new residents and getting them settled into their surroundings.

He said he and his wife, Diane Crowe, moved to The Bristal two years ago when she began showing signs of dementia. Crowe said she died 10 months ago, and he decided to stay at the assisted living facility when he started having problems with his legs.

“I decided, well, I’m better off staying here because I could have gone home, but I’d be in the house all by myself,” Crowe said.
